UNTOLD STORY (aka UNTOLD
STORY: THE MACAU PORK BUN MURDERS, 1993). A lot a extreme Hong Kong Category
III movies came out in the early 90s, as the island began to count down
the days until the Chinese mainland swallowed them up, maybe filmmakers
and audiences needed to get some aggression out, and used these films as
an outlet, I don't know, but this is one of the most seriously screwed up
movies I've ever seen. It goes further than Dr. Lamb and even Run and Kill
(not to mention the nihilistic mid-80s obscurity Flesh and Bloody Horror).
Anthony Wong won a Golden Horse award for best actor with his performance
here as Wong Chi-Hang, the owner of a small restaurant. The previous owner
and his family had disappeared, and after body parts are found on the beach,
the police start to look into Wong's shady past. These cops are led by Danny
Lee (who supplies the film's unnecessary, but, I might confess, welcome
comic relief) and you know what that means. They arrest Wong and subject
him to tortures and beatings, and finally he confesses that he murdered
the entire family and took over ownership of the restaurant. In a long flashback,
Wong's crime is detailed in a scene so extreme it nearly made me sick, he
slaughters the family, even the children (with a broken bottle, no less)
and no bloody detail is spared. I've never seen anything like this, and
anyone who isn't at least a little put off by this is way more jaded than
me. The kicker is that Wong put the family into his popular meat pies, making
him a Macau Fritz Haarmann. Next to the family slaughter, you have scenes
of Wong's prison treatment that almost makes you feel sorry for him. I don't
know if you can recommend a film like this, since only a hardened exploitation
film fan could possibly handle it. Just don't show it to your date for Christ
sakes!
